Tattoo Removal Q&A

How does a tattoo removal work?

Tattoo removal is an aesthetic service to lighten unwanted tattoos or eliminate them entirely. You might decide to go through only a few sessions to lighten the tattoo enough so you can cover or alter it, or you might prefer to go through more sessions to enjoy skin that is completely clear in that area.

Just like many other services at Colorado Skin and Vein, tattoo removal uses powerful light-based devices. More specifically, the team uses two PicoSure® devices.

PicoSure devices direct quick flashes of light into your skin to heat the ink particles within the tattoo. The heat causes the particles to break down into smaller pieces that your lymphatic system can remove as waste.

During the treatment, you wear protective eyewear so there is no chance that the light will damage your eyes. The team at Colorado Skin and Vein also offers local anesthesia since laser treatments for tattoos can cause minor discomfort.

How long does complete tattoo removal take?

The number of tattoo removal sessions you need varies based on many factors and is difficult to predict. While planning your laser tattoo removal, the team considers multiple factors, including:

  • The size of your tattoo
  • Your tattoo’s location
  • The age of the tattoo
  • Which colors of ink were used
  • How deep the ink is

With every session, you see more ink disappear as your lymphatic system flushes it out. Typically, it takes 6-12 tattoo removal sessions to eliminate as much ink as possible.

What is cosmetic tattoo removal?

Cosmetic tattoos are tattoos meant to mimic the appearance of makeup. Microblading is one example, though the process is not exactly like getting a tattoo. Instead, ink is bladed into your eyebrows to look like eyebrow hairs, which makes your brows look fuller. Another example is eyeliner tattoos.

In addition to conventional tattoo removal, Colorado Skin and Vein offers cosmetic tattoo removal for microblading and eyeliner tattoos that you either didn’t like or no longer match your preferred aesthetic. In fact, Colorado Skin and Vein is one of the only offices in the state to offer eyeliner tattoo removal services.
